The Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) and University of California Los Angeles School of Theater, Film and Television (UCLA TFT) announce the second year of their unique program, the UCLA TFT / UCA Storytelling Institute in Cannes. In the interdisciplinary and creative environment of the new Cannes Campus-UCA Creativity Hub, this intensive educational program involves total immersion in feature film screenwriting, based on the model developed by UCLA TFT and globally recognized for its excellence.

Objective

As part of this full-time resident program, supervised by faculty from UCLA TFT and UCA, select UCLA TFT and French graduate students will have six weeks to complete a fully realized first draft of a feature-length narrative screenplay developed from an original idea. This program is designed to nurture and discover a new generation of feature film screenwriters in the extraordinary context of the Cannes International Film Festival.

Who can apply?

The 2020 program is accessible to any current graduate student from France or current UCLA TFT graduate screenwriting students.

Program Description

Selected students will reside in Cannes for the duration of the program. They will participate in classes and seminars on a daily basis, receive personalized supervision in the writing of their script, and benefit from writing time in a creative environment. The Institute culminates in a unique two-week experience at the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival. The students will benefit from professional master classes with screenwriters, directors, producers, actors and attend professional meetings (panels) and screenings at the festival.

Applications to the Storytelling Institute will open September 13 - November 8, 2019. The announcement of successful candidates will be made in January 2020.  The selection for this program will be highly competitive, but we encourage prospective candidates to apply. 

The Partnership

This UCLA TFT and UCA initiative takes place in partnership with the city of Cannes and the Cannes International Film Festival. It is sponsored by the International Chaire of Storytelling from the Vivendi group and its Canal + channel. Vivendi/Canal+ will offer participating students a "right of first look" (“first look deal”) for the scripts produced in the program.

UCA

The UCA, created in 2015, is a community of universities and institutions dedicated to research and training. Comprising 13 members and 40,000 students, it is a recipient of the Initiative of Excellence from the French Government. UCA's ambition is to create an internationally recognized university in terms of educational innovation, the quality of its research, and its roots in the local environment. Among the UCA’s major projects, the Cannes Campus-UCA Creativity Hub will host a thousand students who will take courses specialized in the creation of content and scriptwriting. All of these courses will be developed in connection with the city of Cannes and its internationally renowned events (International Film Festival, MipTV, MipCOM, Cannes Series Festival). They are intended to develop worldwide recognition for the UCA in the field of content creation.

UCA et UCLA School TFT lancent un programme unique : le Storytelling Institute. Dans le nouvel environnement interdisciplinaire et créatif du Campus de Cannes-UCA Creativity Hub, son programme pédagogique intensif consiste en une immersion totale dans l'écriture de scénario et se base sur le modèle développé par UCLA TFT et reconnu dans le monde entier pour son excellence.

Objectif

Dans le cadre d’une résidence, encadrés par les enseignants et scénaristes professionnels de UCLA TFT et UCA, les étudiants auront six semaines pour aboutir à la première version d’un scénario de long-métrage développé à partir d’une idée originale. Ce programme a été conçu pour révéler les nouvelles générations de scénaristes de cinéma dans le contexte exceptionnel du Festival International du Film de Cannes.

Le programme est accessible à tout étudiant ayant validé une licence ou un diplôme équivalent. 

La Formation

Les étudiants sélectionnés résideront à Cannes durant toute la durée du programme. Ils y suivront quotidiennement des cours, bénéficieront d’un suivi personnalisé dans la rédaction de leur scénario et profiteront d’un temps d'écriture suffisant dans un environnement créatif. L'Institut du Storytelling se termine par une expérience unique de deux semaines au sein du prestigieux Festival International du Film de Cannes. Les étudiants y bénéficieront de masterclass de professionnels présents (scénaristes, réalisateurs, producteurs, acteurs) et assisteront à des rencontres professionnelles ainsi qu’aux projections.

Les candidatures à l’Institut du Storytelling arrive bientôt. L’annonce de la sélection des étudiants se fera dans le courant du mois de janvier 2020. La sélection à cette formation sera hautement compétitive mais nous encourageons toutes les candidatures.

Cette initiative de UCLA TFT et UCA se déroule dans le cadre d’un partenariat avec la ville de Cannes et le Festival International du Film de Cannes.
